About Us

Who We Are

Central Baptist Church of Old Providence Island is a loving, Christ-centered community committed to worship, service, and spiritual growth. Rooted in the island’s rich Christian heritage, we gather to learn God’s Word, encourage one another, and share the hope of the Gospel with our neighbors. We value warm fellowship, meaningful prayer, joyful worship, and ministries that strengthen families and guide the next generation. Whether you are exploring faith or seeking a church home, we welcome you with open hearts. Our desire is to grow together in grace, walk in unity, and live out God’s love in practical ways that bless our island and honor Christ.

What We Believe

We believe the Bible is God’s inspired and authoritative Word, guiding our faith and daily life. We affirm one God—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—who lovingly invites us into a personal relationship through Jesus Christ. We believe salvation is a gift of grace, received through faith in Christ’s finished work on the cross and His victorious resurrection. As a Baptist church, we uphold believer’s baptism, the autonomy of the local church, and the importance of prayer, worship, fellowship, and missions. We commit to living out Christ’s teachings with integrity, compassion, and service, sharing the Gospel and making disciples in our community and beyond.

Our History

Our story began in 1890 by Rev. Simon Howard Sr. in the section of Town. Over the years, we have grown, prayed, laughed, and served together. Each step has shaped who we are today.

Beginning of Baptist Work in Old Providence Island

The first Baptist work started in the section of Smooth Water Bay by the Smooth Water Bay Baptist Church, known today as First Baptist Church.

During a business meeting, there were some disagreements, and Rev. Simon Howard Sr. decided to leave and came to Town, where he started the Central Baptist Church.

Origin of Free Town Catholic Church

Out of the Central Baptist Church came the Catholic Church in Free Town due to a disagreement between brothers Simon B. Howard Jr. and Rev. Eusebio Howard. Rev. Eusebio Howard started the Church in Free Town after meeting and working with a Catholic Priest from Panamá. That church later became Nuestra Señora de los Dolores Catholic Church in Free Town.
